Decorated Wellies

Well done to everybody who took part in the Claygate Flower Show on Saturday 16th July. All your efforts made it a fantastic day and a wonderful village occasion.
The Junior section of the exhibition marquee was resplendent with crafts, cakes and colourful artwork. We had around 1000 entries with many children enjoying the twin themes of literary anniversaries and The Queen’s 90th year, producing over 40 portraits of her Majesty as well as more than 50 poems and 20 decorated birthday cakes in her honour.

The cups this year were spread amongst children from a range of schools. Claygate Primary just managed to hold on to the Fawcus Cup for the school with the most prizes; this was despite tough competition again from Esher Church School (with just two fewer first prizes) and from Rowan Preparatory School, who put in an incredible display of over 200 entries. It was also nice to see the new ‘Gap Club’ Pre-school in Claygate joining Jigsaw Pre-school, Little Sparrows and Claygate Montessori with a wonderful selection of little ones’ efforts, and in fact managing to win the Pre-School Group-work cup. Horticulture was well-represented in our traditional village flower show with the CPS Gardening Group running off with a couple of trophies reflecting their green-fingered hard work.

The two cups for ‘best exhibits’ should not go unmentioned: Rosa Johnson’s decorated cake, a 90th birthday party scene with hand-made, individual icing people eating a selection of miniscule sausage rolls and sandwiches, was awe-inspiring and deservedly won the Brian Anscomb cup for Best Exhibit. The CRGT cup for Best in Theme’ went to Laila Carruthers’ Art Club at Claygate Primary - a tapestry showing ninety years of The Queen, incredible in its level of detail and composition.
We would like to be able to mention so many more wonderful pieces of work, so please see the website in the future for pictures of the exhibits we haven’t had time here to celebrate, and look at the lists of winners attached to this email.

Finally, thank you to the children for their hard work, to the parents and teachers for their efforts in encouraging and organising, and also to anyone who tried (and succeeded!) in using our new on-line entry system this year. It all contributed to a very jolly day indeed.

Happy relaxation!

Susannah, Vicky, Clare and Kate - Junior Committee, Claygate Flower Show.
